Studies for Frost Heave Characteristics and the Prevention of the High-Speed Railway Roadbed in the Zoige Wetland, China

The Xining–Chengdu high-speed railway crosses the Zoige Wetland, located on northeast edge of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and upper reaches Yellow River. cold climate frost-heave-sensitive subgrade soil cause a large frost heave deformation roadbed, threatening safety trains. This article systematically studied ground temperature development, characteristics, water content, groundwater level variations by field investigation monitoring. maximum deformations natural flat hillslope reached 25.64 3.17 mm, respectively, this significant discrepancy was mainly caused supply conditions. Future roadbed stability may be compromised deformation. To solve problem, contrasting indoor tests were conducted to analyze characteristics clay replacement coarse-grained (CGS). It shown that absorbed external changed into dispersed pore ice in freezing CGS, while it layered lens clay. Further showed susceptibility CGS proportional fines content initial content. poorly graded had weaker than well-graded CGS. results suggest anti-frost methods should fully considered, including strict control prioritizing use filling, disruption local accumulation filling layer.
